A moving checklist should fit the time you actually have. If your move is soon, begin with somewhere safe to go, essential arrangements and a bag containing what you need for the first night.

If you have several weeks
Confirm the date, compare transport or removals, begin non-essential packing, arrange utilities and broadband, then work through address changes.
If you have one week or less
Focus on safety, keys, transport, medication, identification, chargers, basic clothing, food, pet supplies and essential contacts. Use labelled bags or boxes by immediate need rather than trying to create a perfect packing system.
Before moving day
- Confirm when and how you receive keys.
- Keep tenancy, purchase and identification documents retrievable.
- Arrange care or a secure room for pets during busy loading periods.
- Photograph valuable or fragile items if useful.
- Prepare a first-night bag.
- Record who needs your new address.
On moving day
- Keep medicines, keys, documents, phones and chargers with you.
- Record relevant meter readings and condition photographs.
- Check cupboards, lofts, sheds and charging points.
- Keep pets secured and update identification details when required.
Address changes: keep each action separate
Government updates are not one single notification. In Great Britain, changing the address on your driving licence, vehicle log book (V5C) and any vehicle-tax Direct Debit are separate DVLA actions. Northern Ireland uses different DVA routes, so verify the correct service.
HMRC states that you should report the change after you move. You may also need to update the electoral register, local council, benefits, bank, insurer, employer, pension provider, utilities, healthcare services and subscriptions.
A fictional short-notice example
Mo has six days, limited money and a dog. Day one is keys, transport and a safe pet plan. Day two is medicines, documents and a first-night bag. Packing is grouped as “use now”, “first week” and “later”. Address changes are kept as separate rows, with official links, rather than one vague “tell everyone” task.
